How to Maintain a Hot Tub
There is no-such thing as a maintenance-free hot tub (even Hydropool’s self-cleaning hot tubs require a little work). But by following a few simple steps, you can ensure that your hot tub stays clean, safe and enjoyable year-round.
Looking after a hot tub shouldn’t take more than half an hour a week and if you buy a model focused on reducing maintenance, it will take much less. For most people, this is work easily figured out and as you fall into a routine using your hot tub, the maintenance will turn into a routine as well.
In this article, we’ll cover the essential aspects of hot tub maintenance, including:
- Why maintenance is needed
- Regular cleaning and water care: daily, weekly and monthly care
- How often to change your water
- Proper chemical balance
- How to maintain your hot tub’s equipment
- When to consider professional maintenance
- Required maintenance products
By the end, we think you’ll have a strong idea of what’s required for your hot tub.
Why Is Hot Tub Maintenance Important?
Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the longevity and efficiency of your hot tub. It helps to:
- Prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria and algae.
- Ensure the water remains clean, clear, and safe for use.
- Extend the lifespan of your hot tub and its components.
- Maintain the hot tub's energy efficiency, saving you money on utility bills.
Without regular maintenance, your hot tub will rapidly decline. Your water will become cloudy or green and you won’t want to use your tub until those issues are addressed.
How Often Should You Clean and Maintain Your Hot Tub?
Hot tub maintenance can be broken down. Here's an easy-to-follow schedule:
Weekly Maintenance:
- Check the water temperature: Make sure it’s within your desired range (generally between 100–104°F or 37.7–40°C).
- Inspect the water level: The water level should be above the skimmer to ensure the filtration system works properly (at Hydropool the water line is typically just under the neck pillows).
- Rinse the filters: Remove the filter and using a hose or tap, rinse off the filter and remove any debris.
- Test the water chemistry: Use test strips or a liquid test kit to check the water’s pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels.
- Ideal pH: 7.4–7.6
- Ideal alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
- Ideal sanitizer level (chlorine or bromine): 3–5 ppm (for chlorine) or 3–6 ppm (for bromine).
- Adjust the water chemistry: Add the necessary chemicals to keep the levels in balance.
- Shock the water: Add an oxidizer to break down organic contaminants and refresh the water. This will also help restore sanitizer levels. You can use chlorine to shock your hot tub or if you have chlorine in the water, you can use an oxidizer that “activates” the chlorine. It’s commonly called “shock” in the industry.
Annual Maintenance:
- Inspect the cover: Check the hot tub cover for any damage and clean it to remove any dirt and mildew.
- Replace the filters: Over time, your filters will become clogged with debris and minerals. Once a year isn’t a bad idea.
How to Maintain Your Hot Tub’s Equipment
Beyond cleaning and water care, you’ll want to take care of the various systems that make your hot tub function properly. Here’s how:
The Filtration System:
- Deep clean filters every few months using a filter cleaner or soak them overnight in a solution to remove oils and minerals.
- Replace filters as recommended by the manufacturer (usually every 1–2 years depending on usage).
The Pump:
- Ensure the pump is functioning properly by checking that the water is circulating as expected. If you hear unusual noises or the pump is running irregularly, it could be a sign that it’s time to service it.
The Cover:
- The cover protects your hot tub from debris and helps with energy efficiency. Keep it clean by washing it regularly with mild soap and water. Ensure it’s in good condition and seals tightly to prevent heat loss.
The Best Products for Hot Tub Maintenance
To maintain your hot tub effectively, you’ll need a few key supplies. Hydropool offers a variety of maintenance products that will help you keep your hot tub in excellent condition, including:
- Hot Tub Chemicals: You need a sanitizer (either chlorine or bromine), buffer for alkalinity, and pH up and pH down. You need a bi-weekly scale remover. These are the musts. It’s nice to have a water polisher and a defoamer can come in handy. Here’s a full guide to the chemicals you need: Guide to Hot Tub Chemicals.
- Filters: Make sure you’re using filters that are specifically designed for your hot tub model.
- Covers: A well-maintained cover will last five years or more. But eventually you will need to replace it when it becomes worn.
Should You Consider Professional Maintenance?
Regular DIY maintenance is essential. But there are companies such as Hot Tub Service Plus that will do it for you.
If you ever suspect something is amiss, first consult your local retailer who can set you up with a proper repair person. A professional can inspect the motor, pump, plumbing, and electrical systems to ensure everything is running smoothly. They can also address any issues that might be difficult to detect on your own.
How Do You Maintain a Hot Tub?
Maintenance of a hot tub should take less than half an hour a week. And depending on the model you buy, it can take considerably less than that.
The main thing you need to check each week is your water chemistry, which will go a long way to ensuring your hot tub lasts a long time without major issues.
Ensuring your filters are clean and your water is balanced is the best thing you can do for your hot tub over time.
