How Much Space Do You Need for a Swim Spa?

How Much Space Do You Need for a Swim Spa?

Posted 6/17/2019

Swim spas are increasing in popularity largely due to their compact sizes, making them perfect for smaller backyards and spaces. But how much space do you need for a swim spa? The smallest models available are around 10 feet in length and 7 feet wide. That being said, you still need some space to spare surrounding your swim spa so that bathers can easily get in and out. To find out more about what you should consider when deciding how much space you have and what size swim spa to get, keep reading below.

Tight on Space

If you are very tight on space, you may be able to install one of the smaller swim spa models. As mentioned above, these typically are about 10 feet long, up to 7 feet wide and can be 4 feet deep. Smaller swim spas are typically solely geared towards aquatic therapy and exercise due to their space constraints. If you are looking for a split model that comes with hot tub style hydrotherapy seats, you will probably need to spring for at least an average size model, around 14 feet in length.

What to Consider

Once you have determined that you have at least enough space for the smallest size swim spa available, there are a few considerations you should ask yourself to find the right size for your needs. If you have a bit of wiggle room, will there be more than one person in your home interested in using the swim spa? Do you envision hanging out and relaxing together as a family in your swim spa? If so, you will want a model large enough to accommodate everyone as it can get boring having to wait turns to take a swim or soothing massage.

Another consideration is your height. If you and your family are quite tall, a 10-foot swim spa may not really be enough space to get a good swim workout. If you do not have space limitations, select at least a 14-foot model as that will leave enough space for the flow current function optimally.

How Will You Swim

How you will be using your swim spa as well has what strokes you will be doing regularly will also influence how much space you need for a swim spa. Different types of swim strokes require more space and movement area. It is important that, for example, if you are planning on working on your butterfly stroke that you have enough space, swim current, and resistance to accommodate.

Surrounding Space

As buying a swim spa is a significant investment, it is important that you take your time and ask your dealer plenty of questions during the selection process. In addition to calculating the space for your swim spa, think about your vision for the surrounding area as well. If you will be putting your swim spa in your backyard, you may also want an adjacent relaxation space where people can relax poolside or warm up and cool down.
