Proper maintenance of your swim spa is essential to ensure it remains a sanctuary for relaxation and bonding.

We are all about maintenance at Hydropool: Our self-cleaning function is key to who we are. Customers who shop the Hydropool brand are often looking for the least amount of maintenance and the most amount of relaxation or family time. That’s what we specialize in.

We get asked in our retail stores, “What chemicals do I need for my swim spa?” on a regular basis, because anyone considering buying a swim spa needs to know how they work and are kept sanitized.

We won’t keep you waiting. Here’s the list of chemicals you need:

  • Sanitizer: Either chlorine or bromine. You need one or the other but not both. This is what will help your water safe to use.
  • Ph balancers: You need both kinds, PH up and down.
  • Alkalinity adjusters: Alkalinity is key with water balancing and the first thing you generally set.
  • Shock treatments: Shock is used to get your sanitizer working as hard as possible.
  • Scale reducer: This removes and helps limit any build up in your swim spa.

There are other products out there you can try or use. But this is the list that you need to have in order to have balanced water and use your swim spa.

In this article, we’ll go through:

  • Why you need the right chemicals
  • What each chemical does
  • How often you should be using chemicals
  • The benefits of maintain proper chemicals

Hopefully by the end you’ll know just which chemicals are right for you and how to use them!

Why Is It Essential to Use the Right Chemicals?

Using the correct chemicals in your swim spa is crucial for several reasons:

  • Safety: Proper chemical balance helps prevent minor issues such as skin and eye irritations.
  • Equipment Longevity: The right chemicals protect your swim spa's internal components from corrosion and damage.
  • Water Clarity: Balanced chemicals keep the water clear and free from harmful contaminants.

What Are the Basic Chemicals Needed for Swim Spas? What Do They Do?

Let’s go over each in turn and see what they do.

  • Sanitizers: Sanitizers are the primary chemicals used to kill bacteria and other harmful microorganisms in your swim spa. The most common types are chlorine and bromine. Chlorine is a widely used sanitizer that effectively kills bacteria and keeps the water clear. It is the most common swim spa sanitizer. Bromine is an alternative to chlorine, especially popular for those who have sensitive skin. It is equally effective in sanitizing the water.
  • pH Balancers: Maintaining the correct pH level is essential for the effectiveness of other chemicals and for user comfort. The ideal pH range for swim spas is between 7.2 and 7.8. You require both pH increasers and decreasers. If the pH level is too low (acidic), the water will eat at your machinery over time and softer elements like your pillows. If the pH level is too high it will be alkaline and you can face build-up from the water.
  • Alkalinity adjusters: Total Alkalinity acts as a buffer for pH levels, preventing drastic fluctuations. The recommended range for swim spas is between 80 and 120 ppm (parts per million). Again, you need increasers and decreasers, but you shouldn’t need to use the decreasers very often.
  • Shock Treatments: Shock treatments are used to oxidize and break down organic contaminants in the water, such as sweat, body oils, and cosmetics. Regular shocking keeps the water fresh and clear. There are two kinds. There’s chlorine shock: This type of shock treatment uses a dose of chlorine to sanitize and refresh the water. And there’s non-chlorine shock: It is equally effective in oxidizing contaminants. You use it to “wake up” or shock your chlorine and get it working as hard as possible.

There are other chemicals, such as calcium reducers, enzymes and water clarifiers, but in most cases, you won’t need these. For most people, the list of chemicals above is what is required to keep their swim spa at peak level.

Test strips are what you need to keep your water balanced. Although more accurate methods exist, regular test strip testing is accurate enough for you to enjoy your swim spa.

How Often Should You Add Chemicals to Your Swim Spa?

Regular maintenance is key to keeping your swim spa in excellent condition. Here is a simple guideline for how often to add the essential chemicals:

  • Weekly: Test pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels, then adjust as needed. Add shock treatment. Rinse your filters.
  • Quarterly: Drain and replace your water. Even if it’s perfectly balanced, water needs to be drained and replenished regularly.

Practical Tips for Swim Spa Owners

Maintaining your swim spa does not have to be overwhelming. Here are some practical tips to help you keep your swim spa in top shape:

  • Create a Maintenance Schedule: Consistency is key. Set a regular schedule for testing and adding chemicals. How much you need to adjust your chemicals will often depend on how much you use your swim spa, so your schedule will be unique to you.
  • Keep a Logbook: Record chemical levels and adjustments to track the condition of your swim spa. Some people do this just to pick out patterns. Once you fall into a routine, it’s unlikely you’ll need to keep this up for long.
  • Educate Users: Make sure everyone who uses the swim spa is aware of basic maintenance practices and the importance of keeping the water clean.

Understanding Water Testing and Adjustments

Regular testing of your swim spa water is essential to maintain the right chemical balance.

Most swim spas can be tested with simple strips that you dip into the water to provide an immediate chemical reading of your water. The test strips will show various color ranges and will note which is the ideal range for your swim spa. You adjust your chemicals each week until the test strips show you’re in the proper ranges.

More advanced test kits are also available. These kits typically measure pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels and are often more reliable than test strips – although they are more costly as well. With these, you use water samples to generate results.

Your local dealer will often have advanced testing capabilities if you’re stuck or if you can’t figure out what is going on with your swim spa water. Many offer free testing, especially to new buyers.

Tips for Saving on Swim Spa Chemicals

Maintaining a swim spa does not have to break the bank. Here are some tips to help you save money on chemicals while ensuring your spa remains clean and safe:

  • Buy in Bulk: Purchasing chemicals in larger quantities can be more cost-effective in the long run. Many retailers will give you discounts for becoming a regular buyer.
  • Proper Storage: Store chemicals in a cool, dry place to extend their shelf life and maintain their effectiveness. In general, it’s best not to store them outside as light and temperature extremes will change their effectiveness.
  • Regular Maintenance: Consistent maintenance reduces the need for excessive chemical use and prevents costly repairs.
  • Use Quality Products: Investing in high-quality chemicals may cost more upfront but can save you money by providing better results and requiring less frequent application.

The Benefits of Proper Swim Spa Chemical Maintenance

Taking the time to maintain your swim spa properly offers numerous benefits beyond just clean water. Here are some additional advantages:

  • Enhanced Relaxation: A well-maintained swim spa provides a more enjoyable and relaxing experience, allowing you to fully benefit from the therapeutic properties of water.
  • Better Health: Clean and balanced water reduces the risk of skin irritations and respiratory issues, promoting better overall health for users.
  • Increased Longevity: Regular maintenance helps prevent damage to the internal components of your swim spa, extending its lifespan and protecting your investment.
  • Cost Savings: Preventative maintenance can save you money on repairs and replacement parts, making swim spa ownership more affordable in the long run.
