Whether you're upgrading, relocating, or simply changing the layout of your outdoor space, you may find yourself needing to move your swim spa.

At Hydropool, we recommend hiring professionals for any swim spa move. We have been in business more than 45 years and while it’s possible to move them yourself in a few rare situations, what we have seen in most cases is that the risk of causing any damage is too high. A swim spa is an investment that you would hate to hurt simply to save a few dollars on hiring movers.

In this Learning Centre article, we'll guide you through everything you need to know to move your swim spa safely, including:

  • Preparation steps before moving your swim spa
  • How you move a swim spa
  • Key equipment and tools required for the job

By the end, we hope you’ll have a strong idea of what’s involved in moving a swim spa.

Why Would You Need to Move a Swim Spa?

This actually doesn’t happen very often. Once a swim spa is delivered, what we have found at Hydropool is that they stay in the same place.

There are generally only two reasons we see people moving swim spas. They are either moving or redesigning. A swim spa, like a pool, usually remains in one place once it is established.

  • Relocation: Moving to a new home and taking your swim spa with you.
  • Renovation or redesign of the outdoor space: Shifting your spa to a new location in your backyard. We don’t see this often, but from time to time people’s plan change.

How Do You Prepare to Move a Swim Spa?

Before you begin, there are some essential steps you must take to prepare for the move. Taking the time to plan ahead will make the process easier and more efficient.

1. Drain the Swim Spa:

Start by draining all the water from your swim spa. A swim spa filled with water is an immovable object. Use a submersible pump to get as much water out as possible.

2. Disconnect the Electrical Components:

Next, disconnect the electrical power supply to the swim spa. This should only be done by a licensed electrician. Disconnect the wires and ensure everything is properly turned off. Read more here about why you need an electrician to install a swim spa (or move it, in this case).

3. Disconnect Plumbing and Jets:

If your swim spa is hooked to a heat pump or other features, disconnect these connections carefully. Keep track of all the hoses and fittings so that they can be reconnected at the new location.

4. Prepare the Moving Path:

Check the area around your swim spa for any obstacles or narrow paths that could make the move difficult. You’ll need enough space to maneuver the spa safely. Clear any debris, garden furniture, or other items that might be in the way.

5. Protect the Swim Spa:

Wrap the swim spa with moving blankets or protective coverings to prevent scratches, dents, or damage to the surface during the move. Ensure that the spa is well-secured.

How Do You Move a Swim Spa?

There are two primary methods for moving a swim spa: DIY and professional assistance. Moving a swim spa is not a one-person job and requires the right tools and personnel.

DIY Move:

If you choose to move your swim spa yourself, you will need some heavy-duty equipment:

  • Rollers: These tools can help move the spa across the ground. They’re designed to support the weight and allow you to roll the spa to a new location.
  • A Forklift or Crane: At Hydropool, we only move swim spas with a forklift or a crane. You could rent one of either (depending on your location) and either move it yourself or have it moved for you.
  • Strong, Experienced Helpers: You’ll need a team of people who can lift and maneuver the spa, ensuring that no one is injured in the process.

Hiring Professionals:

This isn’t a question for us at Hydropool: Moving a swim spa professionally is the best option for most homeowners. While it may be more expensive, professional movers have the experience, tools, and expertise to do the job safely and efficiently. Your local retailer will have people who can facilitate any move.

A professional team can:

  • Safely transport the swim spa, no matter the weight or size.
  • Navigate difficult terrain, narrow paths, and other obstacles.
  • Handle the disassembly and reassembly of plumbing, electrical, and filtration systems.
  • Ensure that your spa is in good condition after the move.

What Are the Risks of Moving a Swim Spa?

There are several risks involved:

  • Damage to the Spa: Incorrect handling can result in scratches, cracks, or other forms of damage to the spa’s surface. A crack in the acrylic will ruin the spa forever. That’s why we recommend professionals to do any move – a false step can ruin the entire unit.
  • Injury: Attempting to move a large, heavy item without proper equipment or assistance can result in injury.
  • Damage to Landscaping: Moving the spa can cause damage to your garden, driveway, or other landscaping if not properly planned.
  • Electrical and Plumbing Issues: If not handled correctly, disconnecting and reconnecting the plumbing or electrical systems could cause long-term issues with your swim spa.

When Should You Hire Professionals?

We say 100 per cent of the time. This is especially true if:

  • The swim spa is located in a tricky or tight spot that’s difficult to navigate.
  • You are unsure how to disconnect and reconnect any components (keeping in mind all the electrical needs to be done by an electrician).
  • Hiring professionals ensures that the move goes smoothly and that your swim spa will be in good working order when it’s reassembled at the new location.
