Hydropool Hot Tubs and Swim Spas

Published Aug 30, 2024

Investing in a swim spa can provide both relaxation and fitness benefits.

But will it last? Will it work? Will it be reliable?

With pricing that begins in Canada around $25,000 (for a decent one), a key factor to consider when purchasing a swim spa is its reliability. We are asked about reliability regularly in our stores in one way or another. We know people ask, “are swim spas worth it?” in online chat forums and we know for sure they ask in our Hydropool stores when they come in.

There’s really two parts to what matters when buying a swim spa. Will you use it? And will it last? Because if the answer is yes to both, then swim spas are worth it.

In this article we want to answer those questions and ones surrounding them:

  • What are swim spas made of?
  • How long does a swim spa last?
  • What are the factors in how long a swim spa lasts?
  • Will you actually use a swim spa?
  • What can swim spas be used for?
  • How much do swim spas cost?
  • Ultimately, are swim spas worth the money?

By the end, hopefully, you’ll have a strong sense of whether swim spas are worth it to you!

What Are Swim Spas Made Of?

The reliability of a swim spa is influenced by several factors, including the quality of materials, construction, technology, and maintenance practices.

A good swim spa is made of the following elements:

  • Acrylic: A common material used for the interior shell due to its smooth finish, durability, and ease of maintenance. It is resistant to scratches, UV light, and chemicals. It provides a clean, attractive look.
  • Fiberglass: Often used as a backing material for the acrylic shell to provide additional strength and support. Fibreglass is lightweight, durable, and adds structural integrity to the shell.
  • Vinyl Ester Resin: Used with fiberglass to improve corrosion resistance and prevent water absorption, it helps make the shell durable.
  • Steel: Higher-quality swim spas will use a steel frame for structural support. It’s strong and highly durable, no matter where you live.
  • Wood: Sometimes used for the frame, especially in more traditional or budget swim spas. It can be susceptible to rot and decay.
  • Synthetic Materials: Most modern swim spas often feature synthetic cabinet materials designed to mimic the look of wood but with improved durability. These are resistant to weather, rot, and insects, so they are easy to maintain and last a long time.
  • Foam Insulation: Typically sprayed or inserted between the outer cabinet and the shell to improve energy efficiency.
  • PVC: Commonly used for plumbing due to its durability and resistance to chemicals.
  • Stainless Steel/Titanium/Alloy: Often used in the construction of heaters and certain pump components. Resistant to rust and corrosion, ensuring longevity and reliability. Hydropool’s heater is made out of an alloy product called Incoloy 825, which is mostly a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with additions of molybdenum, copper and titanium, which creates a product specifically designed not to rust underwater. It’s used by off-shore oil and gas companies.
  • Plastic: Swim jets are made from high-quality plastics to resist corrosion and wear, these create your hydrotherapy seating.
  • Pillows: Most high-end hot tubs have some element of pillows for your neck and back.
  • Copper wire: Used for electrical wiring. On good spas it’s covered to further protect it from any elements.
  • Vinyl: Swim spa covers are typically made from marine-grade vinyl with foam insulation inside.
  • LED Lighting: Often used for underwater lighting and around the perimeter for aesthetic purposes.
  • Control Panels: Usually made from durable plastic or composite materials with waterproof seals.

How Long Does a Swim Spa Last?

Depending on how well it is maintained, a high-quality swim spa can last more than 20 years (we know this because we started selling swim spas at Hydropool in the 1980s). Most last between 10 and 15. If ill-treated, no matter what the build quality or which swim spa brand, they won’t last a decade.

A swim spa will require weekly maintenance and water-balancing. Covers will never to be replaced in that time and some pumps may wear our and require replacing. A swim spa is like a car in that since it has working parts, it will require servicing over its lifetime.

What Are Factors in How Long a Swim Spa Lasts?

The durability of a swim spa largely depends on the quality of materials used in its construction and how well it is maintained during its lifetime. High-quality swim spas are typically made from premium-grade materials such as acrylic, stainless steel, and reinforced fiberglass. These materials are resistant to wear and tear, weather conditions, and chemical exposure.

Additionally, the construction process plays a crucial role in the reliability of a swim spa. Look for swim spas that are manufactured by reputable companies known for the quality control measures. A well-constructed swim spa will have a robust metal frame, secure seals, and efficient plumbing systems to prevent leaks and other common issues.

Modern swim spas come equipped with advanced technology and features that enhance their reliability and performance. Here are some key features to look for:

  • Advanced Cleaning Systems: Swim spas with superior technology can reduce the need for frequent manual cleaning and maintenance. These systems use advanced filtration and circulation to keep the water clean and clear.
  • Energy-Efficient Pumps and Heaters: Energy-efficient components not only save on operational costs but also reduce wear and tear, contributing to the overall reliability of the swim spa.
  • User-Friendly Controls: Intuitive and easy-to-use control panels make it simple to adjust settings and monitor the swim spa, reducing the likelihood of user errors and potential damage.
  • Durable Jet Systems: High-quality jets are essential for providing consistent water flow and resistance. Reliable swim spas feature jets made from durable materials that resist clogging and corrosion.

What Kind of Maintenance Do Swim Spas Need?

Regular maintenance is crucial to ensuring the long-term reliability of your swim spa. Here are some maintenance tips to keep your swim spa in top condition:

  • Water Quality Management: Regularly test and balance the water chemistry to prevent issues such as scaling, corrosion, and bacterial growth. Using the right chemicals and cleaning agents is essential for maintaining water quality.
  • Routine Inspections: Perform routine inspections of the swim spa components, including the jets, filters, pumps, and heater. Address any signs of wear or damage promptly to prevent further complications.
  • Cover Usage: Using a high-quality cover when the swim spa is not in use helps protect it from debris, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations, extending its lifespan.
  • Professional Servicing: Schedule regular professional servicing to ensure all components are functioning correctly and to catch any potential issues early.

Will You Actually Use a Swim Spa?

Let’s ask someone who bought one (she uses it, but not just for what she bought it for):

What Can Swim Spas Be Used For?

A swim spa can be used for everything a hot tub can and everything a pool can. You can swim in it, lounge in it, let your kids play in it, get a massage or use hydrotherapy in it, work out in it or just hang out in it. And it can be used year-round at an affordable monthly cost. It can do this while costing a bit more than a hot tub, but significantly less than a swimming pool.

How Much Do Swim Spas Cost?

Good swim spas start at roughly $25,000 (Cdn) and go up to about $80,000 (there are a few models out there worth even more than that, but we’d argue at that point you’re no longer getting good value or are shopping for a very niche product).

Ultimately, Are Swim Spas Worth Money?

A reliable swim spa is an invaluable addition to your home, offering both relaxation and fitness benefits. By considering factors such as the quality of materials, advanced technology, and proper maintenance practices, you can ensure that your swim spa remains a reliable and enjoyable part of your lifestyle for years to come.

Take the time to research and choose a swim spa from a trusted brand, and you'll be rewarded with a high-performing, durable, and reliable swim spa.
