What is the Difference Between a Hot Tub and a Jacuzzi?

F

You’ll often hear people use the words hot tub and Jacuzzi interchangeably but have you ever wondered what is the difference between a hot tub and a Jacuzzi? Technically, there is a difference. While all Jacuzzis are hot tubs, not all hot tubs are Jacuzzis. This is because Jacuzzi is a trademarked brand of hot tubs, pool products and more. We’ll explain more about the different terms below.

Hot Tubs

The word hot tub became popular in the 1970s when the first portable, acrylic hot tubs were introduced to the market. The Merriam-Webster dictionary refers to a hot tub as ‘a large tub of hot water in which bathers soak and usually socialize especially: such a tub with a whirlpool device.’

Hot tubs have evolved over the past several decades to include a number of unique features as well as many health and wellness benefits. The majority of today’s hot tubs are equipped with:

    • Acrylic shells
    • Massaging water jets
    • LED lighting
    • Electronic controls
    • MP3 audio systems
    • Bluetooth technology
    • Customizable massage programs
  •

In North America, hot tubs are also often called spas. However, in other parts of the world, spa is typically used to refer to some type of natural mineral spring or body of water.

Jacuzzi

Founded in Italy in 1915, Jacuzzi initially dabbled in aircraft and propeller design but moved on to bath products. They produced the first portable hydrotherapy unit, which was made to sit in a bathtub. Later, they took the jet that was used in the portable unit and built it into a wall of a swimming pool. Then it evolved into being adapted into a stand-alone fiberglass bathtub, essentially the first hot tub that has continued to evolve to today.

As Jacuzzi quickly became a household name, it became used to refer to all types of hot tubs, often like how Kleenex is often used to refer to all types of tissue paper.

What to Look for in a Hot Tub

Whether you choose to call your hot tub a hot tub, Jacuzzi or spa the important part is that you know what features are important and how to choose a quality model. Make sure that you consider:

  1. Water Jets - The type, style, and pressure of the water jets, as well as the water flow rate, play a major part in how satisfying your hydrotherapy massage will be.

  1. Insulation - Helps trap and reuse heat, keeping your utility bill low as well as maintaining stable water temperature.

  1. Cabinets - Can come in a wide variety of colortexture, and patterns

  1. Size - How many people will regularly be using your hot tub and how much space will accommodate all bathers.

  1. Warranty - A good warranty will stand by the product and offer service and support for your hot tub.

  2.
