What is a Hydrotherapy Swimming Pool?

For many people, a swimming pool is simply a place to get some exercise, splash around and have some fun in the water. For those who are looking for something a little more relaxing, a hot tub can be a great place to warm up and receive a hot water massage while releasing stress and tension. However, there is a third option that allows you to combine these two forms of aquatic recreation while providing something that’s much more therapeutic. You don’t have to forego exercise or relaxation with a swim spa and you’ll also have access to the added benefit of hydrotherapy. What is a hydrotherapy swimming pool/swim spa and how is it better than a regular swimming pool or a hot tub? We’ll explain below.

What Is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is a form of physiotherapy that allows therapeutic movements and exercises to be performed in warm water. Hydrotherapy can be part of a pain management or injury recovery program or as a routine to increase general fitness and health. Hydrotherapy takes advantage of some of the intrinsic properties of water to allow exercises to be performed with reduced impact and greater safety while helping to increase blood flow and circulation.

What Are the Benefits of Hydrotherapy?

As mentioned, hydrotherapy can be part of a pain management or injury recovery program or it can be part of a fitness routine. The buoyant properties of water reduce pressure on bones and joints while helping to support body weight. This can increase balance and reduce the chances of falling while easing bone and joint pain. Water also provides resistance with which to work muscles against, but the level of resistance is limited by the amount of force the body is able to generate. This reduces the chance of injury caused by taking on more than the body is able to handle. This type of resistance training can also increase muscle strength while improving endurance. Warm water will also help the muscles relax which can mitigate pain, but also warm up the muscles in preparation for more strenuous exercise. When it comes to safer exercise and pain reduction, hydrotherapy is hard to beat.

What Is A Hydrotherapy Swim Spa?

Hydrotherapeutic swim spas, when compared with swimming pools or hot tubs, typically allow for more control over the water’s temperature, pressure and movement depending on the user’s goals. While you can certainly control the temperature of a regular swimming pool, because of the large volume of water you’ll have a hard time keeping the temperatures high without placing undue stress on your water heater and your wallet. And while it’s easier and cheaper to keep hot tub temperatures closer to 40 degrees centigrade, there’s not a lot of room to allow you to swim and exercise. The swim spa gets around the size problems of swimming pools and hot tubs by generating a current that’s strong enough to allow you to swim in place. This gives enough room to practice a full swim stroke while also allowing you to keep temperatures at a therapeutic level.

How Can A Hydrotherapy Swim Spa Benefit You?

Swim spas are unique in that they give you the best of both worlds. You can use them for swimming and exercise while also allowing you to soak in warm water with massaging water jets. Whether you’re looking for relief from pain or looking to improve your physical fitness, a swim spa is able to provide both with a fairly small footprint. If you’re looking for a versatile addition to your exercise and/or pain management program, a hydrotherapy swim spa might just be right for you.
