Can You Put A Swim Spa Indoors?

Not everyone enjoys having a swim spaoutside. Whether you prefer having more privacy or do not want to have to exercise in the snow or rain, you may have wondered if you can put a swim spa indoors. Swim spas can be great installed inside or in a sunroom, however, there are some different factors that you need to consider first, especially with ventilation. In the article below, we will discuss what you need to plan for with indoor swim spa installations.

Avoiding Mold and Mildew

As the water in swim spas are heated, especially with split models featuring a hot tub section, it evaporates fairly quickly. Add in the warmth of the water temperature that is evaporating and unfortunately, this dampness can be an ideal environment for mold and mildew to grow. Having the room your swim spa is in equipped with rot-resistant and water-friendly materials will help, but so do a few ground rules. Make sure that anyone using your swim spa dries the floor of any water splashes once they exit the spa as well as wipe down any wall condensation. Keeping the area around your swim spa dry will avoid the risk of mold and mildew formation.

Have Good Ventilation

Proper ventilation is essential for indoor swim spa installations. As mentioned above, the steam rises from evaporating water and if there is no place for it to go, it will form condensation and result in mildew or mold growth. Installing proper vents, ceiling fans, and possibly even an air system will be necessary to ensure that your swim spa room is well ventilated.

Get Proper Insulation

It is also important that the room your swim spa is located in is well insulated. This is because when warm air meets cold surfaces, like windows or walls, it causes condensation to form. Well insulated windows and walls are necessary to ensure that they can handle the steam from the swim spa water evaporation.

Non-Slip Flooring

As indoor swim spas are placed on flooring, if it is not the right material, they can be very slippery and hazardous. Make sure that you choose a water-resistant, slip-resistant tile and purchase a few rubber mats to place around the swim spa entrance for extra safety. Don’t use carpet, wood or astroturf as the water will get trapped and causerotting.

In addition to considering the ventilation requirements of an indoor swim spa installation, it is also important to make sure that it can be transported through your home. Before deciding to install a swim spa indoors, make sure that you triple measure all entryways, hallways, staircases and paths leading to your home to ensure that the swim spa will be able to fit. It is possible that you may need to remove a door from a frame in order to get the swim spa into the room you want it installed in. Just make sure to carefully plan ahead and have a contractor on hand to help with the electrical hookup.
